Jointer with a Byrd Shelix cutterhead. Shelix cutterhead is from the standard steel knives that came with your machine. Installation will take a couple of hours, but the benefits will last a lifetime. Shelix cutterhead are arranged in a helical pattern, so they cut constantly with a quiet hum. Compare that to the roar of your straight jointer knives, slamming their full length against the wood. And there are four edges on every tooth. Carbide is far less prone to damage as well, from nails, paint, glue, or whatever. The teeth lock automatically in the perfect position, with no tedious setup needed. Your Shelix cutterhead will not only stay up and running many times longer, but the unmatched surfaces it produces will save you countless hours of sanding and scraping. Byrd technician, who will get you up and running in no time. Start by wrapping the cutterhead with tape to protect your fingers. Leave it in its shipping box, and spin it in place as you wrap on an overlapping strip. Remove the red cutterhead guard, and then the infeed table extension as shown. Loosen and remove the fence from its support bracket at the back of the saw. Remove that large nut and the whole fence assembly will come free. Remove the main cover on the back of the machine, and also the smaller pulley cover just above it. Jam the cutterhead with a strip of wood as shown, and remove the bolt and washer that hold the pulley in place. Stretch the belt over one edge of the pulley, and then rotate it to get the belt to pop off. With the belt off, you can now remove the pulley more easily. Tap it with a hammer and wood block to slowly work it off its shaft. Rotate the pulley to distribute the blows and avoid jamming it as you remove it. Hold onto the square key that keeps the pulley from spinning, and put it aside for later. To lower them completely, retract the stops on the back of the machine. Like the other parts, the bearing blocks that hold the cutterhead are attached with simple machine bolts. Remove those bolts from the front and back blocks. Note that both tables are now lowered, which exposes the cutterhead. Rotate the bearing block to distribute the blows. The bearing will likely stay attached to the cutterhead. The jaws of a gear puller can be arranged in a variety of ways. Squeeze those around the back of the bearing and twist the center bolt against the center of the bearing shaft. Then use a ratchet to twist the bolt and pull the bearing gradually off the shaft. The bearing will likely stay inside the block as you remove it. If not, you can use the smaller gear puller to remove it from the cutterhead. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean, and add a bit of machine grease if you have it. Then place the cutterhead on end, resting its end in one of the blocks it was shipped with, and tap the bearing onto its shaft using a hammer and wood block. Keep it level to get it to slip onto the end, and then tap it down fully into place. The block goes over the bearing the same way. Now attach the bearing block on the drive side. Its bearing should still be inside it. Notice the thin wood shims I inserted above the lower block that was installed earlier. Also, the other shipping block makes a nice pad under the hammer, fitting nicely over the drive shaft. Clean the mating surfaces, add some grease if you have it, and drive the bearing blocks down into their pockets with a dead blow hammer, or a normal hammer and wood block. Remember that the drive shaft goes at the back of the jointer. Replace the two bolts that hold each block tightly in its pocket. The blocks and can be tapped slightly forward or back on their cutterhead shafts in order to get the bolt holes to line up properly. Tighten the bolts until each block is firmly seated. Fit the key onto the driveshaft. Push it backward as you tap it down into place. Tap the drive pulley onto its shaft and key, and tighten the bolt that holds it in place. Then work the belt onto the pulley the same way you removed it. Pull off the long tape strip to expose your beautiful new Shelix cutterhead. Return the outfeed table to its proper position, level with the top of the teeth. An easy way to do that is place a straight stick on the table, marking a line on the stick where the table ends. Do this test at the front and back end of the cutterhead to be sure the stick moves the same amount at each end. This demonstrates that the cutterhead is seated level in the machine. Replace the fence, guards, and covers you removed earlier. Now you can plug in your jointer and enjoy cleaner, quieter milling for decades to come. Photos and instructions by Asa Christiana.
